Sensory Essentials

The calming tools that actually work in our house.

Chew Necklace

My son has been using chew necklaces since he was five. Before we found these, he used to chew through T-shirts daily. Having a safe, durable chew option made such a difference for his regulation, sensory needs, and our laundry pile. If your child is an oral seeker, these are absolutely worth trying.

Flavored Chew Stixx

Two of my boys only tolerated chewy tubes once I found flavored versions: total game changer. The flavor made them instantly more accepted, reduced oral-seeking frustration, and helped them regulate without trying to chew on clothes or toys. If your child tends to reject chewelry, the flavored options are 100% worth trying.

Vibration Plate

This has been one of our most powerful sensory tools at home. The vibration plate gives deep proprioceptive input that helps with calming, grounding, and body awareness, especially on those high-energy or dysregulated days. My kids use it before schoolwork, during breaks, or whenever they need help “resetting” their bodies. It’s one of those tools that looks simple but makes a huge difference in regulation.

Our Favorite Adaptive Kitchen Tools

Twist-off Bottle Opener

This little tool makes a big difference for independence. My boys use the twist-off bottle opener to open water bottles on their own, without frustration or needing help every time. It gives them confidence, supports hand strength, and turns a tricky daily task into something they can do completely independently.

Left-Handed Can Opener

Only one of my sons is left-handed, but for him this tool has been a total game changer. The left-handed design gives him the leverage and control he needs to open cans safely and independently. If you have a left-handed kiddo (or one who struggles with grip and coordination), this makes kitchen tasks so much more accessible.

Pancake Batter Dispenser

This has become a kitchen favourite in our homeschool home. The ball mixer inside makes it so easy to mix up batter without the mess. My boys love to help with breakfast now because they shake and pour the pancake batter onto the griddle.

Detachable Pot Handle

My middle son loves helping me cook. Being able to grip the pot easily with a safe handle gives him confidence and reduces risk of slipping or burning. He doesn’t need a pot holder for this handle!
